An occassional blog featuring the "track of the moment" - the song that I cant get out of my head. Hopefully, it will be a track that I like and that you'll like too!
For those offended by humour that uses religion, you'd better skip this track. It's very funny though - it's Weird Al Yankovic and What If God Smoked Cannabis.
Me and Pete once saw Air live in Lille. It was a very strange show as you are never quite sure what is pre-programmed with an 'electric act'. This reminds me of 'Queer as folk' (the UK series, not the US one).
She may be mad, but she is still pretty amazing, especially when you consider she is now 60 years old! This is one of my other-halfs favourite artists. So, heeeerrrrreeesss Grace!
I saw Blondie at Glastonbury not long after this had gone to Number 1. They were awful for the first half of their set and then got the act together. This track was a highlight though.
Similar to the posting of The Stranglers, Television were a punk band that moved on from shouting and not really playing music. I heard this track late one night on MTV2 which I switched on by mistake. The guitar style is unusual and the song very original. Sorry about the false start and end on the video.
Many many years ago, when I was about 18, I decided to learn to play the guitar. After a couple of years of ****ing around learning a few chords and not really progressing, I took lessons with a guy called Rick Pronger. Although I never become that proficient, I did learn a lot over the next few years. Ricks musical taste was as varied as mine and it meant that I found out about a lot of new artists. At the very first lesson I was given two songs to learn, The needle and the damage done by Neil Young was one of them. On that day, I became a Neil Young convert.
A few weeks ago on Channel 4 (in the UK), comedian Peter Kay produced a truly classic TV programme that took the **** out of reality TV shows with "Britain's Got the Pop Factor and Possibly a New Celebrity Jesus Christ Soapstar Superstar Strictly on Ice". The winner was transvestite Geraldine from Northern Ireland....brilliant! Here is the "winning song" - so very tongue in cheek.
Across 110th Street is a stylish soul track from the film of the same name. It was used again in the film Jackie Brown by Quentin Tarantino, which is one of my favourites. Rather than see Bobby Womack in action, I decided on the opening credits of Jackie Brown.
I have liked Julien Clerc for many years, since seeing a video on MTV Europe in 1987 not long after the channel had started. It's a shame that the UK has missed out on this brilliant singer-songwriter.
A dark song by the late Jeff Buckley. This is taken from the album Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk released after his death. I love the drums on this song. There is no video, so this is someone's homemade version.
I am not a great fan of Keane - I cant quite put my finger on it, but I don't like much of their output. However this track is great! Although the start of Is It Any Wonder? sounds like a guitar, it's all keyboards. The track is from the album Under the Iron Sea.
I heard The Fray on the radio a while ago with their excellent track How To Save A Life and so I bought the CD on eBay. This is one of a few great songs and is called Over My Head.
Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol has been played to death on the radio, yet hasn't (and will unlikely) become annoying. It's just too good for that! They were the first band I saw play at the O2 in London.
Call him Bryan and he will kill you - RYAN Adams is a far far superior artist in my opinion. He is well known for recording tons of songs and therefore releasing several albums in a year. His Gold Album is great from start to finish. Check out New York, New York...
Without doubt, Fleetwood Mac is my favourite band. I have everything they produced from 1975 onwards and everything that Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham have ever recorded as solo artists. I could have chosen many tracks, but today I have Rhiannon in my head. As the track was recorded in the time before videos, this is one of many live recordings.
Barenaked Ladies are the best live band in the world... what more is there to say? From the first album 'Gordon', the track Brian Wilson is perfect pop with a dark thread running through it.
Get Back by The Fab Four is a deceptively simple song with hooks at every turn. This clip is from the famous rooftop concert - the last live public performance by the band.
I heard Le Vent Nous Portera by Noir Desir on a French radio station a couple of years ago and it took me ages to track it down. It translates as 'the wind will carry us'. You get 10 points if you can sing along.
Although he needs a haircut in the video, it's a really good soul song from the young Englishman. Undiscovered is from James Morrisons album of the same name.
OK, it's a bit twee, but I love acoustic tracks like this with overlapping guitars and that singer-songwriter feel. For What It's Worth by The Cardigans is from their album Long Gone Before Daylight.
A relatively new track for me. This is Soul Meets Body by Death Cab For Cutie. I heard a podcast of Deathcab For Cutie (who I had assumed were a rap band for some reason) and so I found a few of their tracks on iTunes and loved this one.
Todays track is by R.E.M. and is called Supernatural Superserious from the album 'Accelerate'. It's a classic rock track with plenty of jangly guitars. The thing I love about R.E.M. is you always know that you will get something original, but it's still definately R.E.M.
I am starting this blog with a random pick of 4 and 5 star rated tracks on my iTunes... Won't Give In by Neil and Tim Finn aka The Finn Brothers. It's from their album 'Everyone Is Here' and is a quality MOR/AOR track.
